Chinyero & Volcan de Garachico

Highlights

Heading to the north-west of the island and take gentle circular walk along farm and forestry tracks to see evidence of some of the most recent volcanic activity on the island. On clear days we are afforded spectacular views of Mount Teide (3,718m) and its neighbour Pico Viejo (3,135m), which may still sport a light dusting of snow in winter or early spring.

Our trail takes us alongside the lava flows and through the pine forests into the interior of the island and towards the site of the Chinyero vent which last erupted in 1909. From here we head north to take in the Volcan de Garachico, the site of the 1706 eruption that destroyed the town of the same name.

We return to the village of San Jose de Los Llanos where we enjoy a quiet drink in a very laid back local bar with a beer garden.

Distance: 16km | Ascent/Descent: 400m
