Pico Viejo

Highlights

At 3135m Pico Viejo is Tenerife's 2nd highest peak, yet in spite of being almost 600m shorter than its more famous neighbour Pico Viejo remains a gruelling climb covering well over 1000m of ascent.

The last eruption of Pico Viejo was in 1798 making it the last eruption to occur within the bounds of the Parque Nacional del Teide. The site of the eruption is known as Las Narices del Teide (Teide's nostrils) and a blow-hole on the south-west flank of Pico Viejo marks the site of the most explosive part of the eruption. Lava flows from this eruption which lasted several months now cover much of the south-west corner of the national park.

Our ascent takes us over "aa" and "pahoe-hoe" lava flows from Teide's last eruption and up over the pummice to Pico Viejo's summit and take in its stunning crater which measures some 800m across and is over 60m deep. We descend via the same route, but for those looking for one of the most extreme day ascents Tenerife can offer we can continue to Teide summit via the saddle which connects the two mountains.

Pico Viejo also features in our Teide by Night overnight trek which we operate during summer months.
