The watermill of Las Vegas

Highlights

Unlike its namesake in the US desert, Las Vegas is a small mountain village in the south of Tenerife where there isn't even a fruit machine let alone a casino in sight. This tiny settlement grew as a farming community in the early 19th Century and it agrarian past leaves us with an interesting and feature-rich walk which takes us back in time to less complicated era.

Along this walk we learn how farmers used techniques to create rich fertile fields and conserved water by clever use of local resources.

A network of open irrigation channels bring water from the aquifers higher in the pine forests and the power of the water was used to drive a watermill which ground wheat and other cereals for the villagers.

Our leisurely walk takes in all these features and more, including cave houses and ruined cottages. The setting is a mixture of Pine Forests and old farm-fields with good footpaths and gradients which are accessible to all healthy walkers.

Distance 8km | Ascent/Descent 350m
