Vilaflor - Paisaje Lunar

Highlights

We begin our walk in the picturesque mountain town of Vilaflor (meaning town of flowers) situated some 1450m above sea-level. Our route takes us East out of Vilaflor along good footpaths lined with spring flowers.

We head into the pine forests and across wild valleys and ravines ascending some 450 metres up into the foothills of the Las Cañadas ridge. Our objective is nestled in an untouched valley, where we find a spectacular pumice formation which some describe as a bit of moonscape here on earth.

The Paisaje Lunar (lunar landscape) as its known colloquially is the product of a series of volcanic eruptions and the erosive powers of wind and rain which have sculpted this delicate landscape.

We return to Vilaflor via a largely circular route through the pine forests, taking in ancient trees, ruined cottages along the way. There's time for a quick look around the historic town centre before we head back to the coast.

There's also the option of stopping at a local vineyard to sample some organically produced Canarian wine. Choose between a young red, a lively rosé, a very dry white or a medium fruity white which slides down like silk. If you enjoy the wine you are welcome to buy a few bottles to take home and enjoy at the hotel.

Distance 13km | Ascent/Descent: 450m
