Day #1 - Los Cristianos (Tenerife) > San Sebastian (La Gomera) > Vallehermoso > Chipude (900m ascent, 16km approx)
We meet at Los Cristianos Harbour at 08:30 in time to catch the Fred Olsen Express ferry to San Sebastian de La Gomera.
The crossing to San Sebastian takes just 35 minutes, from here we pick-up the local bus service which takes us around to our start point in Vallehermoso on the north-west of the island.
We climb steeply out of Vallehermoso enjoying spectacular views of deep valleys and impressive mountains. As we ascend we enter into the humid Laurel Forests of the Garajonay National Park, a world heritage site. We take lunch at a picnic area before tackling the final leg of our first day which takes us through the rural villages of the central upland area of the island.
Late Afternoon, we arrive in the village of Chipude where we stay at a small hotel with a restaurant attached. The accommodation is simple and uncomplicated, but a warm welcome awaits tired legs. The food is hearty and home cooked and the local wine flows freely into the night.
Day #2 Chipude > Altos de Garajonay > El Cedro > Hermigua
(900m descent, 22Km approx)
After a good breakfast at the hotel we set off for the second day of our trek, our first leg is cross country towards the highest point on the island, Altos de Garajonay, from here on a clear day you can enjoy 360° panoramic views of La Gomera and its neighbours, Tenerife, La Palma and El Hierro.
Next we begin our descent through the laurel forests and towards the remote valley of El Cedro. We take lunch in a picnic area within the forests before emerging into the valley.
This stunningly beautiful village with its green fields and hanging valley is more reminiscent of the Alps than the Canaries.
From El Cedro we continue our decent down the valley, passing precariously positioned farmland and reservoirs, towards the village of Hermigua on the north of the Island of La Gomera.
We spend our final night in a beautiful Hotel Ibo Alfaro. Built 150 years ago, this traditional manorial country house was converted into a 17 room hotel in 1996. The rooms are well furnished in a rustic style and enjoy beautiful views of the valley and the Atlantic Ocean.
We enjoy a drink on the hotel terrace and watch the sun go down before taking dinner in a local Basque restaurant. Suitably wined and dined we return to the hotel for a restful nights sleep.
Day #3 Return to Los Cristianos (Tenerife)
After a leisurely breakfast and short stroll around the village, its time to leave Hermigua and return to San Sebastian, we arrive around lunchtime and have the afternoon to explore the town or laze on the beach before our return Ferry to Los Cristianos departs at 17:00.
